THE WORKHOUSE OF THE TITANIUM UNIVERSE: GRADE 2 TITANIUM

Grade 2 titanium has a minimum yield strength of 275 Mpa (40 ksi), and relatively low levels of impurity elements, which places it between grades 1 and 3 in terms of strength. Grade 2 is widely used because it combines excellent formability and moderate strength with superior corrosion resistance. It can withstand attacks from a variety of aggressive and corrosive media for extended periods of time.

Grade 2 titanium's ability to share some key elements from grade 1 while being slightly stronger and equally as corrosive resistant makes it the “workhorse" of the commercially pure titanium industry, thanks to its varied usability and wide availability.

Architects began to use titanium in the 1970s thanks to its performance in corrosion resistance. That property opened its wide use along seashores where the salty air devastated other materials with rust and corrosion. Titanium was also perfect for museums and religious buildings due to its strength and moldability for intricate designs.

In the automotive industry, titanium and its alloys have been applied to motorcycles and automobiles to reduce the weight of their component parts. In recent years, titanium exhaust systems, engine valves, and connecting rods have been widely applied mainly to sports types or large motorcycles. In the world of motorsports, titanium has become the go-to material for strength and weight reduction while also providing unparalleled safety.

Titanium's mechanical and chemical properties make it an ideal metal for power plant condenser pipes and nuclear waste storage. Titanium allows power plant condenser pipes to be strong, lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and thinner which allows for better heat transfer.

Other industries using grade 2 include medical, oil & gas components, reaction and pressure vessels, tubing or piping systems, heat exchangers, liners, flue-gas desulphurization systems, and many other industrial components. The fact that Grade 2 is commercially pure titanium and provides lightweight and corrosion resistance but isn't quite as strong as alloys like grade 5 while still possessing excellent tensile strength, makes it an ideal choice for high-pressure and temperature systems.

Ultimately Grade 2 brings its skillset as pure alpha titanium. It has become the most widely used titanium alloy in all product forms for industrial service because of its moderate strength and excellent corrosion resistance and formability.
